County Sheriff's Air Squadron
Gismo Award
Sometimes,
things just don't go as expected. In recognition of some
less-than-planned aerial events, sometimes calling into question the
wisdom of our membership, the
Air Squadron presents an annual "Blessed Bearer of the Gismo" award.

Steve Allen |
Steve Allen was
awarded the 2000 Gismo
award for showing off his "partial structure" flying skills. Well prior
to his arrival while flying his crop duster, some power plant engineer
decided to
string a 600,000 volt power line right where Steve would later plan to
have his aircraft and wing fly through. After shearing off 6 feet of
wing once it impacted the poorly placed power line, Steve did his
muscle-man imitation-- wrapping his arms and legs
around the control stick in his fight to keep the aircraft under
control. |

Byron McClusky |
There was some doubt
whether hitting a parked aircraft would quality for a Gismo award, so
Byron hit two-- just to make sure.

|
Jim Teel
|
Jim had a cool, calm, and
collected flight in the Gee Bee-- right before crashing it in
Watsonville, CA. |
1996
|
Doyle Carroll & Ron Richey |
Everything was great about
the landing-- except for the tailwheel. |
1996
|
Ron Richey & Kelly Couch
|
Through superior
airmanship and boatsmanship, they managed to prevent the Seabee from
sinking entirely into Lake Berryessa.
